Dear Branch
Officer
A new addition to the Gift Aid scheme has just become law. It is
called GASDS – which stands for
Gift Aid Small Donations
Scheme – and it can result in significant extra funds for your
Branch if used properly.
In Short
Essentially, small anonymous donations will count as being made under Gift Aid
as long as a few basic procedures are followed. You can use GASDS in two basic
ways.
1. You can put a collecting pot in the middle of the ringing room at
each Branch practice and invite members to toss coins in. Most members will
happily put in a pound or two – or tip in their small change.
2. At Branch
teas, if the hosts are happy to provide a free tea – as they often are – you can
announce that they are generously doing that, and that they hope members will
contribute generously to the collection you’re about to come round with. Your
members will know that the ultimate destination of the money will be BRF grants
to Branch towers.
The
Procedures:
Naturally
there are a few rules to follow.
1. As with
all Gift Aid, the givers must get nothing back. The tea referred to above must
be a genuinely free tea from the host tower. The donation they make will go to
the Branch not the tower. The Branch must
not pay
the tower for the tea.
2. The maximum individual donation should not exceed
£20. If someone wants to give more – or give with a cheque – it should be
recorded under their personal declaration.
3. Each collection should be
counted and recorded separately – which, of course, you’d do anyway.
4. You
need to record how much of each denomination of coins and notes you received in
each collection – which you’ll need to do for the banking anyway.
5. You need
to bank each collection separately.
6. You need
to record where each collection is taken.
Telling Philip
Philip will
claim the Gift Aid back from HMRC for you and add it to your Branch funds. The
schedule you’ll need is attached, and it’s really very simple if you complete it
just after each collection.
Please give
Philip or me a ring if you’d like to talk about this.
